Her words caught him off guard again and he was too drunk to suppress a scandalized gasp once they were on the street.
"Hookers is--are illegal!" A thought. "Aren't they?"
no subject
Actually, she isn't entirely sure they're illegal anywhere else, either... there certainly were plenty in Bavan if you knew where to look. And Vandare, too-- goodness knows plenty of them had followed the Nesters to their new city.
Her tone had been light, but after a second's thought she pipes up again, almost sounding a little indignant-- as though predicting he might want to debate it for some reason.
"--And I mean, come on, it's gonna happen whether it's legal or not... at least they're doing it somewhere where people'll look out for them."

"I guess so..." he admitted at last, but his ears were back and he was glancing around as though he was afraid of getting in trouble just for thinking about hookers. Suddenly he leaned and had to catch himself on the wall. "Eating people is probably illegal too."
no subject
"... Yeah, well. I don't see anybody doing anything about that anymore, either."
Giving her head a shake, she looks over her shoulder at the kelpie and his sad newspaper collection.
"Anyway, the hookers and blackjack are optional. If you ever want a decent drink, look for the Devil's Nest."
She reaches into her pocket, then pulls something small out and tosses it in his direction. Doesn't really bother aiming too well, it'll stick to him wherever it lands probably.
It's a little matchbook with an devilish-looking imp logo.

"If I'm ever able to afford a decent drink."
He looked up too late to catch the matchbook and his hands closed on empty air. The little calling card did in fact hit him on the shoulder and just. Stay there. Like flinging a magnet at a fridge. Maurice stopped walking and carefully peeled it off to look at it. Devil's Nest. He felt like he'd heard that name somewhere but he wasn't sure where. Online? The news?
"Is it in--your town?"
She'd mentioned that she had 'a town'. He really didn't know how literal that was.
no subject
"Yep. Djavulenstad."
She pauses to wiggle her talons for theatrical effect.
"The Devil's City. Or the Djonutstand. Or the jumble of letters that nobody bothers with. I didn't pick the name."
no subject
Maurice tried to parrot the word until she translated it for him. He was just going to call it Deviltown in his head. He fumbled with the matchbook in his fingers as he thought about it.
"All the towns here kinda have a weird sound don't they...guess 'cause its not America or--"
The kelpie's green tone shifted and he suddenly and very quickly excused himself to the alley they were paused outside of to duck his head into a trash can.
