[audio]
The history book, the mockumentary, or the corny crime noir?
[audio]
[audio]
[Because okay, while she's pretty sure there's a few raunchy jokes in BALLS OF STEEL, she wouldn't classify that as a... dirty book.]
... The dirty one?
[YEAH SHE DIDN'T READ IT, BLAKE. You can breathe a sigh of relief.]
[audio]
But, the thing I really gotta ask you is-
[His voice softens a bit.]
How'd you know?
[audio]
[Oh god. SHE HADN'T REALIZED THE DETECTIVES BANGED.]
[But she's spared the awkwardness of having to explain that she ACCIDENTALLY sent him a gay harlequin romance novel by what he says next.]
[Which is-- while not what she expected to hear-- not entirely surprising. The fact that he said it at ALL is the biggest shock. For a second, she looks just a LITTLE stunned... but then her mouth quirks into her standard fond, crooked grin.]
--Well, I'll be honest... I actually didn't.
But I'm glad you told me-- now I know what series to get you for next Christmas.
[Might as well flick the video on. It comes up on Blake looking alarmed for a moment, then sheepish.]
Ah, hell. Let the cat out of the bag, huh.
[He rubs his head, where the hair by the temple is going gray. It's unnerving to talk about out loud, but also strangely freeing, like walking out onto unsure ice.]
It's not so bad, right? There's weirder things in the world.
Hey, you say that like it's weird in the first place.
[His mouth tightens as he imagines what his old buddies would say.]
Nah. Not there.
[His expression relaxes a little, and gets a touch of wryness.]
Now here, where people carry around whales and killer starfish in their back pockets? Not being a hundred percent straight isn't such a big deal.
[His eyes wander away from the screen.]
You know you're the first person I've ever told?
Besides the guy who figured it out on his own.
Well, gosh, I'm honored.
[She's laughing, but not meanly. She can relate to that self-deprecating humor!]
You know, even if your cop buddies wouldn't have gotten it... you don't have to deal with 'em here.
And even if you did... I've known plenty of not-a-hundred-percent-straight guys who could probably knock their blocks off in five seconds flat if any of 'em gave ya trouble.
[He smiles slightly, almost shyly.] I could do plenty of that myself. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean I plan on punching assholes in the head any less.
But hey.
Keep this under your hat, all right? I'm not exactly ready to go public.
[She lifts her hands.]
Your secret's safe with me.
[And then, with a small, slightly unsure grin, she glances over her own shoulder before leaning in conspiratorially.]
And if you're still worried, well... here's some collateral.
I'm not exactly one-hundred-percent-straight, either.
Re: [video]
[It's been a long time since he could say that about anyone.
Then his eyebrows go up.]
You serious?
[He laughs and shakes his head.]
Hell, girls these days, that's pretty much par for the course.
[It's a strange, giddy feeling. He's talking about this like anything else, and look at that, the world isn't ending.]
[She sounds a little giddy too, to be honest. Outside of Envy (who had called her on it and wound up having to spent the next, like, half-hour explaining to her that BISEXUALITY IS PERFECTLY NORMAL and also PRETTY MUCH EVERYBODY THINKS LUST IS HOT), Blake is the first one she's spoken even a whisper of this to.]
[It's kind of freeing.]
[He never thought he'd be talking to anybody about this, let alone a girl half his age.]
Didn't prepare me any more for suddenly realizing-- damn, you know?
[Hell, she can't believe it either. But it's a relief.]
[His expression looks contemplative.] Me, I guess I always kind of knew. Just knew for sure it wasn't something you talked to anybody about. Not unless you wanted to get your ass kicked.
[And maybe she'd have NEVER realized it, if she hadn't had to share a bed with Lust that one time.]
[Which is, in hindsight, kind of an amusing anecdote all by itself, but when Blake goes on, she sobers up a little. When she speaks again, her voice is soft.]
... Sounds like it must have been pretty lonely.
Eh, I never thought about it like that. There's plenty of crap you never tell anybody about.
I was too busy getting in fights to get lonely.
[STILL DID.]
Anyway... my lips are zipped, ol' man.
[He pauses for a second, looking away for a second.]
Hey.
Thanks, Heather.
[He smiles slightly.]
The book's hot, too.
[Man what would she even do without Blake.]
And it's weird how much lighter he feels.]
[She laughs, too. It's contagious.]
Anyway, I gotta head out. Gonna try and get some battles in while I still have daylight.
Enjoy your gay detectives.
