"And I am still alive." That was all that mattered, in the end.

IF HE CAN BE CRYPTIC, SO CAN SHE!

That's Scar's way of saying he owes you a favor.

But he is kind of smelly and looks like he might punch someone for pointing that out, so she refrains from mentioning it. Instead, she spreads her wings in an idle shrug.
"Well, I'm plenty secure. I got claws, I got teeth, and I got a voice that has people just throwing money at me. ... Even if sometimes it's to get me to shut up."

"You knew something of this life before coming here." It was a wild, uncalled-for shot in the dark as far as assumptions went, but Scar thought it was clear. Heather had the bearing and confidence of a person who knew how to fend for herself. Yes, he knew she had been here quite a while already, but she seemed right at home talking to the strange man who had just crept out of an alley. That spoke volumes. Most young women avoided speaking to him at all costs.

That's her first assumption-- truth is, she'd never been homeless before coming here. But surviving on hostile streets that offered no place to rest is indeed something she has some experience with.
And as ghastly as the things this place did to its visitors was, her new body came with its own internal wellspring of confidence.
She's fairly certain that if he abruptly shifted gears and charged her-- to take her earnings, take a bite out of her, or worse-- she could not only get away unscathed but take a piece of him with her. His eyes, maybe.
But she suspects it won't come to that.
He might be big and scary-looking but his behavior doesn't seem threatening, nor does it hold that deliberate, over-the-top agreeableness employed by men looking to charm girls into situations they can't escape from.
"I've had plenty of practice keeping alive, let's put it that way."

"Does that mean you are living on the streets now?"

She scratches the side of her face with one talon, watching him stand there before her with half-lidded eyes.
She's not about to tell him WHERE those places are-- she might not be afraid or suspicious, but she's not stupid.
Heather Mason does not like to be found.
"I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you don't, huh."
