Val Jr. can be described as the Pokemon equivalent of Brock, or if you're feeling a little more brutally honest, Heather's creepy eyeless martial-arts-trained butler.
His egg was a gift from Rise Kujikawa, whose friend Chie was looking for homes for her Hitmonlee's eggs. Not knowing what it would hatch into, Heather happily accepted the gift, and waited. ... And waited. ... And WAITED. For months, the egg did not hatch, although movement on the inside seemed to indicate that whatever was in there was certainly still alive and kicking. Finally, one fateful Halloween night, the egg chose to crack at last... revealing a bouncing baby Tyrogue, which coincidentally sort of resembles a deformed infant version of the good archangel and celestial midwife of the Order, Valtiel. Especially since if he had eyes, he sure as hell didn't show it because he never opens them.
Heather was horrified, and he was named Val Jr. for the uncanny resemblance.
Like his namesake and despite her continued unease around him, Val only ever had her best interests at heart, and from a young age resigned himself to looking out for his trainer from behind the scenes, waiting patiently for her to stop spazzing out and grabbing her heart every time she caught sight of him out of the corner of her eye.
His time to shine came a couple years later, when dozens of trainers and Pokemon were whisked away to an extradimensional dream castle and forced to fight their way out. Val Jr. was one of the Pokemon stolen from Heather, but while she was initially dismayed to find him in the already-nightmarish environment, he quickly proved his loyalty by evolving into Hitmonchan to help her fight off the monstrosities lurking in the corridors. Since then, Heather has realized how much she was judging him for something he had no connection with, and has devoted herself to training with him and trying to make him feel included in the team. No matter how initially creeped-out she'd been, his ongoing devotion had been nothing but helpful in the long run.
Sportingly, he seems to harbor no bitterness over the initial cold shoulder, and continues to help out as much as possible, with as much as possible. Val is a 'mon of many talents, from battling to cleaning to watching younger Pokemon. While he's not at all stupid or naiive, he is sometimes earnest to a fault and can be just slow enough on the uptake sometimes that craftier members of the team can dupe him into aiding and abetting before he realizes what they're up to. Good luck getting anything past him twice, though-- Val Jr. is no fool, and on the battlefield his sheer dedication to training alone makes him one of the most reliable winners Heather's got. Especially with his incredible accuracy.
